Mando Alvarado, Michael Ray Escamilla, 2009, 2010, Feature, Mexico, United States, 94min, Spanish with English subtitles
A border crossing film with a difference: it’s a comedy! This madcap road-movie follows two Mexican no-hopers as they try and cross the border illegally into the US.
A week before the birth of his first child, Manuel learns that his absent father who immigrated to the US is about to be executed in Texas. Abandoning his job cleaning peep-show booths at a strip club and against his wife’s wishes, he heads north to try and meet his father one last time. Manuel’s videocam-toting buddy Diego tags along, planning to make a documentary on the illegal border crossing.
Mistaken identities, family traumas, and dehydration complicate their quest, but they
finally learn a familiar lesson: that there’s no place like home.
