Misión México is a non-profit, non-government organization that cares for children who have been orphaned, abandoned, abused or come from situations of extreme poverty. It is based in Tapachula, Mexico, and is run by Queensland couple Pamela & Alan Skuse.
Pamela & Alan first volunteered at an orphanage in Tapachula in 2000, which shortly thereafter closed. Faced with heartbreaking decision of leaving the children to return to the streets, the couple decided to take on the enormous task of running the refuge themselves. They have devoted their lives to caring for these children.
The refuge currently cares for around 50 children on a daily basis, most of who live there on a permanent basis. Over the past 8 years Misión México has helped around 250 children from various circumstances of need.
Misión México provides refuge and hope to these children by giving them a home, family, love, education and opportunities for advancement in all areas of their lives.
Funds donated by the 4th
Sydney Latin American Film Festival's Community Support Program will contribute to the cost of the children attending school. The number of children in Pam and Alan’s care is continually rising and subsequently the costs related to providing the children with an education are increasing. The donation will assist with food, uniforms, books and school outings.
