Inocente

DOCUMENTARY, USA, 2012, DIR. SEAN FINE & ANDREA NIX FINE, 40 MIN, ENGLISH/SOME SPANISH SUBTITLED

Academy Award® winner Inocente is an inspiring story of a 15-year-old girl in California. Though homeless and undocumented, she refuses to give up on her dream of being an artist. It hasn’t been an easy road – her past punctuated by a father deported for domestic abuse, an alcoholic mother, the endless shuffle through homeless shelters and the constant threat of deportation.

Inocente is offered the opportunity to show her work, but her family life is at a tense impasse. Despite all this she channels her irrepressible, irreverent, flawed and funny personality towards a future where she is in control.

Inocente is both a timeless story about the transformative power of art and a timely snapshot of the new face of homelessness in America – children. Neither sentimental nor sensational, Inocente will immerse you in the very real, day-to-day existence of a young girl who is battling a war that we rarely see.

Winner – 85th Academy Awards 2013: Best Documentary (Short Subject)

Street Years

DOCUMENTARY, ARGENTINA, 2012, DIR. ALEJANDRA GRINSCHUN, 74 MIN, SPANISH WITH ENGLISH SUBTITLES

An intimate film spanning 11 years, director Alejandra Grinschpun has interwoven the story of four homeless boys living on the streets of Buenos Aires. They offer up a world rarely seen by others and one they are desperate to escape. The film intercepts the boys in five-year intervals and tracks their journey to build a better life. In the longitudinal style of England’s famous ‘Up Series’ we first meet Andrés, Rubén, Ismael and Gachi at a photography workshop. Each boy opens up to the camera, sharing stories of nights spent in abandoned train cars, on the streets or anywhere they can find shelter as though it was a game. What would their futures hold? The film jumps five years, and then six to reveal four lives now heading in different directions.
