BAJA CANTINA OPENING NIGHT FIESTA
For the second year in a row, the Festival has partnered with Ryan’s Paragon Hotel at Circular Quay to host a fabulous fiesta following the screening of our Opening Night Film, The Clown. Headlining the entertainment will be El Orqueston, a 12-piece salsa and timba orchestra with a huge live energy.
Feast on a delicious selection of Latin-inspired bites and enjoy our favourite drinks from Sagatiba Cachaça, Pacifico Beer and Jed Wines. Grab your tickets early as our Opening Night Fiesta always sells out!
El Orqueston is a 12 piece charanga style band playing timba and salsa cubana. Unique in Australia, it features the heavenly and punchy sound of 3 three trombones, violin and tres (the ‘cuban guitar’) on top of a full complement of percussion, keyboards and bass, and pays tribute to the great timba orchestras of Cuba. El Orqueston features Peruvian tenor Richard Valdez on lead vocals, and a cast of the finest players from Sydney’s latin music scene.
OPENING NIGHT FILM – The Clown | O Palhaço

Benjamin (Selton Mello) and Waldemar (Paulo José) are the fabulous clown duo Mongrel and Thoroughbred. Benjamin is a clown without an identity, a social security number, or proof of residence. He rambles through the roads of Brazil with the hilarious troupe of Circus Esperança. However, Benjamin thinks he has lost his talent and goes on an adventurous journey after his dream.
Benjamin will experience small but meaningful adventures. Through crooked roads he aims at answering his father’s question: “In life we must do what we know how to. Cats drink milk, mice eat cheese, and I’m a clown. What about you?” Benjamin will need some time to figure it out.
The Clown is a multi-award winner and was Brazil’s entry for Best Foreign Film at the 2013 Academy Awards.
Selton Mello (director, screenplay, actor) was born in Passos, Minas Gerais, and raised in São Paulo. Selton Mello is one of the most versatile and talented actors of his generation. He started acting during his childhood and has boasts a 30 year career at only 38 years old. In many hits in theatre and television, he has played a wide range of remarkable roles in the movies in practically all genres, directed by beginners and veterans, while conciliating the enthusiasm of both critics and audience.
In 2008 he directed his first feature, December, which was awarded for best direction at Festival de Paulínia and the 2nd Brazilian Film Festival in Los Angeles (2009).
Among his acting works, the following stand out: O Auto da Compadecida and Lisbela e o Prisioneiro (directed by Guel Arraes), Lavoura Arcaica (by Luiz Fernando Carvalho), O Cheiro do Ralo (by Heitor Dália), Meu Nome não É Johnny (by Mauro Lima), A Mulher Invisível (by Claudio Torres), Jean Charles (by Henrique Goldman) and A erva do Rato (by Julio Bressane).
Paulo José (actor, Waldemar/ Thoroughbred, the Clown) is one of the country’s greatest actors and has a remarkable career in cinema, theater, and TV. He has played memorable roles in films such as O Padre e a Moça (by Walter Lima Jr.), Todas as Mulheres do Mundo and Edu Coração de Ouro (by Domingos de Oliveira), Macunaíma and O Homem do Pau Brasil (by Joaquim Pedro de Andrade), O Rei da Noite (by Hector Babenco), Benjamim (by Monique Gardenberg), Quincas Berro d´Água, by Sérgio Machado, among many others.
“Acting in The Clown was a piece of cake (this is a well-known expression, like duck soup, although I have never seen duck in the soup, much less soup on the duck). It was a true buffoonery, with various feelings, laughter, smiling, a tear shed here and there; a metaphor of life, inclination, and art, the paths already taken by our parents that we must deny so as to open up new directions for ourselves. Benjamin’s conflicts reminded me of a poem by Antonio Machado “caminante, no hay camino, se hace camino al andar”.
